Myths about Peanut Butter

Peanut butter has had its fair share of fame and scorn over the years. Some describe it as lip-smacking, while others believe it is fattening but cannot live without it in their daily meals. However, most health and fitness enthusiasts prefer a nut butter that goes well with toast, bananas, apples, and even on its own. While many people are drawn to this nutritious and delicious snack, others are concerned about the potential drawbacks.


Myth 1: Peanut butter is only fat and no nutrients.

While peanut butter is high in  fat content, it is not entirely unhealthy. Peanut butter contains far more beneficial nutrients than healthy fats. The majority is made up of heart-healthy fatty acids such as mono and polyunsaturated fats. Furthermore, peanut butter contains Vitamin E, protein, magnesium, potassium, and niacin.


Myth 2: Peanut butter can increase the risk of diabetes.

Contrary to popular belief, peanut butter is a low-carb spread rich in healthy fats, protein, and fibre. Peanut butter with no added sugar is actually beneficial to people who have fluctuating blood glucose levels. Furthermore, peanut butter spreads contain magnesium, which is an important nutrient for people who are prediabetic or have type 2 diabetes.


Myth 3: Peanut butter causes obesity.

As with most spreads, having too much of it is harmful and has its drawbacks. This nut butter is high in fat and high in protein. While it is ideal for those looking to bulk up quickly, it also aids in weight loss. 


Myth 4: Peanut butter is high in sodium and is purely unhealthy

Peanuts do not contain a lot of sodium by themselves. While peanut butter has a high sodium content of around 152 mg, it only accounts for 10.1 percent of an adult's ideal daily intake of 1500 mg. Not only that, but your favourite nut butter promotes gut health. It is high in fibre, which reduces inflammation and boosts gut bacteria for better digestion.



Overall, peanut butter is gradually becoming a favourite among most people due to its numerous health benefits. Moderate amounts of vitamins and minerals are ideal for those seeking a well-balanced, healthy diet. But keep in mind that anything in excess is not a good idea.
